The noRom story:
Co-founder Shernon James first envisioned the company and
has made it most of what it is today. At first, Shernon didn't know what type of
web site noRom.com should be, the site had an "under construction"
page up for a month or two after the domain was purchased. After thinking what
would be more useful for him, he decided to make it a "Freebie" site
where he would store and share the hottest freebies. After about 2 weeks, the
freebie site (noRom.com) was receiving on average 100 visitors per day, suddenly
out of the blue came an email from a communications and marketing company based
in the UK with a deal, they wanted to buy the domain noRom.com and name rights from me and
offered an undisclosed figure for it. After being overwhelmed with the price and
options, I proudly rejected it and moved on with my plans for the site, it was
also my hobby at the time.
Being popular, having a lot of friends and having a passion for meeting new
people, I decided to add a message board to my then sister site GamePalz.com.
The message board was a free version offered by EZ Board. Members and friends
started joining and becoming active. After my new passion was found (chatting on
message boards), and the becoming success of my GamePalz.com board, I looked
into a more professional and configurable board, that's when Ben Cooper, Co-CEO of
GamePalz.com at the time, referred V-Bulletin (VB) to me, he even set everything
up for me because I knew nothing regarding PHP which the board was based
on. After the switch, and a little advertising, the board became real popular
and being an open minded person I took request for new forum topics. The
suggestions poured in like rain. I tried my best to add them all and before I
knew it, our member count was doubling by the day. noRom.com has gone through
somewhere in the ball park of 10 layouts and 4 co-founders.
We try to constantly add new things to keep our guest coming
back for more & to never have a dull moment. There will always be something
new and exciting for our users to do & view. We also want to serve those seeking
information, thus our organized web directory & search was born. Our
technology used is nothing spectacular, nor simple. We program in your basic
HTML, PHP, Javascript, DHTML, SHTML and use MySQL server software to manage our databases
running on
Unix servers.
We currently outsource our
web hosting due to a small budget, to a small but very reliable web host. Some of our plans for the future
are to create a huge Internet community, to establish one of the biggest and
best networks of web sites, and to have one of the most active forums. The team is working on creating an
extensive business and marketing plan which will help make our goals very achievable. The
noRom.com story is a never ending one, look for us in the press in the future
for these are not our last words.
Where did the name noRom come from?
At first, the name was pronounced "No Rom" and that was the original
thinking of the name. After showing the site to a few friends, they quickly
brought to my attention that No Rom spelled "moron" backwards and
thought it was cool and funny. At that point, the new way to say and advertise
No Rom was norom, to make it stand out a little better for marketing purposes, I
capitalized the "r" ... now spelled "noRom". Since the
name was changed to noRom, it has stayed that way since and most likely will
stay that way for a very long time, if not forever. Our new name brings a lot of
attention to itself being catchy and funny. It's also something that our age
group can relate to, it's a word commonly used.
